About Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small Caribbean island approximately 20 miles (32 km) north and east of Belize City. The island is about 5 miles (8 km) long and less than a mile wide, although most activity occurs in a much smaller area.  In most places on the island, it’s a short two-minute walk from windward to leeward sides. Caye Caulker is divided into the North and South Island, separated by what is known as "The Split", a channel dividing the island in two. Legend has it that the island was “split” during the infamous Hurricane Hattie in 1961, while others believe it was dug out by settlers living there in the 19th century. The town is called Caye Caulker Village and is on the South Island. There you will find a range of restaurants, gift shops, bars, dive/snorkel shops and more, including multiple grocery stores.

In Caye Caulker, life moves at a snail’s pace. "Go Slow" is not only their motto, it's their way of life.  No one is in a rush. Time is an afterthought. A visit to Caye Caulker is for relaxing on the beach or by the pool, eating lobster and other amazing seafood, enjoying the local beer and wonderful tropical drinks, and spending the evenings dancing at one of the reggae bars.

There aren’t any paved roads on Caye Caulker.  The island is easy to navigate by foot, bike or golf cart. Golf Cart rentals are available, but golf cart taxis can take you anywhere for around $5US. The north island, once sparsely inhabited, is growing quickly with new homes and hotels being built regularly.  As a result, there are an increasing number of restaurants, bars and beaches to visit there.

Blu Zen guests can access the village by utilizing the resort's free boat shuttle to the water terminal, or by traversing the road behind Blu Zen (Hattie Street) to The Split, by foot, bike, or cart, and using the walk-on/ride-on Split-to-Split Ferry. The ferry costs $2.50 US/person and bikes are free.  It runs from 6AM - 10PM.

Caye Caulker enjoys beautiful tropical weather year-round, and temperatures range between 82–89 degrees for daytime highs, and 75-80 in the evenings, although temps can be a tad cooler in the winter months. There are many times when daytime and nighttime temperatures vary by only a degree or so.  The rainy season is between June and October, although in our experience there is still plenty of sunshine. Rain usually moves through quickly. The easterly breezes are very welcome on the island. We have experienced stronger winds but honestly find it very pleasant and helpful at keeping pesky bugs away! Speaking of bugs, it is a good idea to bring spray with you although it can be purchased almost anywhere on the island if you find you need it.  One remedy we've used is to take B12 a week before the trip as that seems to keep the bugs from biting.
